The three most popular websites in my comedic market

In my search of knowing my audience and how the would search for my company and product, I decided to do an analysis on the three most popular websites in the Atlanta comedy market. These are my competitors and by viewing the demographics and traffic rank of their websites will give me an understanding of my audience. For this search I used www.alexa.com to obtain my information. I wanted to do an analysis based on the past 6 months but my three competitor websites are ranked greater than 100,000 page views therefore no historical data is available beyond three months.

My first competitor is Punchline Comedy Club, Atlanta’s premier comedy club. (www.punchline.com). In the United States Punchline’s world traffic rank is 389,613 with a percentage of 100.0%. Alexa’s traffic rank is 1,481,414 page views in the past 3 months. The percentage of visits to punchline.com that came from a search engine was +20%. I was not shocked at the number of page views Punchline receives because this club is well known as the club the visit in Atlanta. This is due to the A-list comedians that have performed there and Punchline is the longest running comedy club in Atlanta. Their audience demographic is males ages 45-54 that has had some college and no kids. This audience views Punchline’s website from work. I fully understand Punchline having such an audience. They are located downtown Atlanta amongst working businessmen. They have been in business since 1982 therefore because of the longevity and age of the club ages 45-54 would be the common age range of their audience.

My next competitor is the Laughing Skull Comedy Club, which is known to bring the biggest names to the world’s smallest comedy club (www.vortexcomedy.com). In the United States Laughing Skull’s world traffic rank is 543,369. Alexa’s traffic rank is 2,177,808 page views in the past 3 months. The percentage of visits to Laughing Skull that came from a search engine is +66%, which is an increase from the -14% three months ago. I personally base this increase due to the summer season approaching and audiences are now looking for activities to do and venues to visit. Laughing Skull is in the back of a very world known restaurant called the Vortex. The Vortex became popular due to TV shows like Man vs. Food that attempted to complete two of Vortex’s biggest hamburgers in the world challenge. Their audience demographic is users in the age range of 18-24. They have no children, are college educated and browse this site from work. These demographics are understandable do to the young residential area in which Laughing Skull is located. They also have a comedy school that is comprised of a series of standup classes.

My final competitor is the Funny Farm Comedy Club, which is known for a great comedy line up and nightlife entertainment (www.funnyfarmcomedyclub.com). There was no regional data available. This could be due to the fact that Funny Farm has recently moved to a new location and website. However Alexa’s traffic rank is 3,595,930 page views three months ago. The percentage of visits to Funny Farm is +31%. Though the recent data and regional data is not showed yet I truly believe that there will be an increase in page views due to their audience searching for their new location and info on the club. Their audience demographic is males ages 35-49 with no college or kids. I believe that these demographics will change shortly due to their new location. Funny Farm has recently moved and partnered with Andretti Indoor Karting & Games. Under one roof there is a comedy club, go karts, rock wall, rope course, arcade, and a sky bar.

By analyzing the demographics and page views of my competitors I see that Black Box’s demographics can range between 21- 54, some college, with kids and viewing from home. That’s just my guess. I did notice that search terms my audience will use are: Atlanta Comedy, Standup Comedy in Atlanta, and Atlanta Nightlife. They will also look at sites such as: Atlantanightguide.com and www.hotlantacomedy.com. This was a very interesting and helpful analysis if not for my blog viewers then for my future staff and I. I cannot wait to get it all started!
